Storytime Theme: Lunar New Year
It’s time to celebrate Lunar New Year (or at least create a lesson plan so it’s ready when you need it!). Lunar New Year is celebrated by people in countries around the world including China, Vietnam, Korea, and Malaysia. And while celebrations may vary from one country to another, from one family to another, it’s a time for family and friends to come together and celebrate!
This lesson plan gathers stories from a variety of cultures in wonderful picture book read alouds, fun rhymes and songs about Lunar New Year (still often referred to solely as Chinese New Year), and a few fun crafts for kids to create as well! As always, take the parts you need and leave the rest.
Plus, if you have a family that you know that celebrates, it might be worth asking them if they’d be willing to help. You don’t want to make your only conversation with them to be about representing an entire culture to discuss a holiday or celebration, but if you are familiar, it might be worth asking if they’d mind you asking a few questions about the holiday. I think it’s always important to make sure that you are being respectful of cultures, religions, and holidays, especially if you don’t celebrate a specific holiday yourself!
