Storytime Theme: Drums

I started this lesson plan focusing on musical instruments and as I began selecting books, I found a lot of drum books, so I switched gears and focused just on drums. This is a great storytime to talk to kids about rhythm and patterns and to practice those ideas with rhythm sticks. Rhythm sticks are two sticks – one that is smooth and the other has ridges to make different sounds. When I use rhythm sticks at storytime, I always ask caregivers to help keep an eye on exuberant little ones to make sure we don’t bump our neighbors! (I’ve never had anyone get hurt at storytime using rhythm sticks! And the kids love them!) You can find rhythm sticks all over the internet, but these are similar to what my library has.

This would be a great storytime to include a lot of music is for kids to listen to the drum beats, I only included a few songs below, but if you love to listen to music, don’t be hesitant to include old school rock or even pop songs (just check the lyrics), families will love recognizing some of the music and “playing” along with it!
