Storytime Theme: Día de los Muertos
The next holiday to celebrate this fall is Día de los Muertos, a holiday to remember, celebrate, and pay respect to family and friends who have passed away. This holiday is celebrated on November 1st and 2nd, traditionally by Mexican families. Kids may have some understanding of this holiday because of the Disney/Pixar movie, Coco. And you can easily incorporate some stories and songs from the movie into this storytime.
Learn about ofrendas, the importance of marigolds, calaveras, and more with board books and picture books that are perfect for toddlers and preschoolers. I’ve also included some traditional Mexican music as well as some crafts that are best geared toward preschoolers and even older elementary school age kids as well. Storytime doesn’t have to be just for PreK kids, you can combine a read aloud with other activities to create a program that works just as well for early elementary school age kids as it does for preschool. You can select longer titles, show clips from Coco, and use resources from National Museum of the American Latino.
