New Adult Must Reads

Let’s start this post off with a quick definition. New Adult is a category of literature that fits in between young adult literature and adult fiction. It’s that space for people from 18 – 30 who are looking for characters who are similar in age and may (or may not) be in the same place in life. Possibly in college or just starting your first job, books about identity and relationships. You’ll often find these titles at the center of Book Tok and Bookstagram trends.

History of New Adult

While the term “new adult” hasn’t really caught on too much, it was coined by a publisher in 2009 as a way to market toward readers looking for an “older YA” book, it can be helpful when searching for books. It’s unlikely you’ll find most libraries creating a new adult section, and while you might see some booksellers promoting these titles, but from a social media perspective it just hasn’t caught on in that past 15 years. And honestly, I’m surprised – especially because as you’ll see a few of the books on this list are HUGE in terms of popularity and I can’t imagine why publishers aren’t pushing this category/genre more to get more sales. And maybe because it hasn’t necessarily caught on with readers, it might just not be something that works as a marketing scheme.

Regardless, if you recognize the titles or authors of a few of these books on the list below, you might be interested in others! I know once I started researching this category more, I found more and more authors I’ve read or at the least recognize. Happy reading!
