Top Ten Tuesday: YA Summer Reads

With summer literally around the corner or already here for some students, it’s the perfect time to get some reading in just for fun! No pressure of school assignments and extracurriculars to compete with, summer time is a wonderful chance to read for fun. It’s often hard for teens to stay readers because there is so much grabbing at their attention, but reading is a wonderful way to spend time not on a digital device and instead slide into the life of someone else even for just a while. It can be a great way to relax at the end of the day rather than endlessly scrolling through Tiktok or Instagram (which even I’m prone to do sometimes).

Ways to Read This Summer

I tried to create a book list that included some easy beach reads, plus a few thrillers for those who love a fast-paced novel. Teens can also try listening to audiobooks which can often be downloaded from your local library for free from apps like Libby or cloudLibrary. Teens can also try comics or graphic novels for a different type of format that makes for quick reads when they don’t have a lot of time. And while, manga and super heroes are common, there are also some really wonderful realistic fiction graphic novels available too.

And finally, and maybe this become a book list down the road, try a novel in verse – written in a poetry format which leads to a very quick read because there are far fewer words than a typical novel. Don’t be deterred by the word poetry, these books are powerful stories (just with a lot less words). But, for now, try a book on this list as you gain a little bit of extra time in your daily schedule without schoolwork to do.

When Dimple Met Rishi by Sandhya Menon
